October 2009 -
Lawyers' fees are set each year by Convocation, through the
budgetary process.
Lawyers are invoiced for fees once a year. The fee amount depends on
a lawyer's status and associated category at the time of billing
(approximately one week prior to the mailing of the invoice). Status
generally refers to the circumstances of the lawyer's work (sole
practitioner, employed in education, retired). Should a lawyer's
status change during the year, the fee category will be adjusted
upon notification by the lawyer and a refund granted if applicable.
Lawyers who commence practising, become employed or move to a higher
fee-paying status during the year are required to pay a pro rata
increase in their annual fee. The fee is prorated on a monthly basis
regardless of the number of days worked in a month. An adjusted
invoice is prepared and sent to the lawyer after the lawyer reports
their change of status.
It is very important to notify the Law Society immediately of any change in status. More information under Status/Category
