Organization & Floor Plans

Organization
The Great Library's collection occupies three floors at the west end of Osgoode Hall. The main entrance to the library, located on the second floor in the centre range of the building (south of the court rooms), leads directly into the Main Reading Room. The Reference Office is located at the extreme west end of the library on the second floor. Stairs and an elevator to the first floor and the basement are located just south of the Reference Office.

The collection is arranged according to a modified Library of Congress classification scheme (known as KF Modified), with the exception of primary legal materials, digests and periodicals, which are assigned local call numbers. Most books are shelved on an open stack basis.

Second Floor
The Main Reading Room, the American Room and the Reference Office are all located on the second floor. The Main Reading Room and adjoining Digest and Provincial Statutes rooms house Canadian federal, provincial and territorial statutes, law reports and digests. The Canada Gazette can be found in the west gallery and the Ontario Gazette in the east gallery. An Information Desk is also located in the Main Reading Room. The American Room contains U.S., British and international statutes, law reports and digests. These primary materials and finding aids are arranged by jurisdiction and assigned local call numbers in the online catalogue AdvoCAT, as follows:

Local Call Number Materials
Rpts Law reports
Stat Statutes, bills, and gazettes
Regs Regulations and orders in council
Dig Digests and legal encyclopedias

Note: These materials are listed in the Red Books (red binders listing materials by citation and providing location designations), which can be found near the Information Desk and at the west end of Main Reading Room. AdvoCAT catalogue records also provide shelving locations.

The Reference Office houses the Quick Reference, Circulating, and Reserve Collections. The Quick Reference Collection includes rules, dictionaries, directories, and law lists. The Circulating Collection consists of "lending library" books (biographies, humour, etc.), which may be taken from the library for two-week loan periods. The Reserve Collection makes available second copies of frequently used Canadian books for quick reference only (additional copies of these books, along with many other related titles, are located in the stacks on the first floor). A small reading area is located adjacent to these collections. Reference staff are available at the Reference Desk on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide assistance to library users.

Computer workstations in the Main Reading Room and the Reference Office provide access to AdvoCAT (the library's online catalogue) and the Internet for legal research. LexisNexis Quicklaw, Westlaw Canada, LegalTrac, HeinOnline and a number of other online databases are also available free of charge to Law Society members and candidates in the Articling Program on library computers.

Coin and vend card operated photocopiers and a change machine are located in the Digest Room. A device called an Autotron, which keeps track of the number of copies made, is available at the Reference Desk for use with one of the photocopiers. (After the user has completed photocopying, library staff forward an invoice for the copying to the firm, adding a $2 handling fee.)

A members' telephone is also located in the Reference Office on the second floor.
